Winter is coming, temperatures are dropping... and with them, the questions for electric cyclists:
Should I continue to use my bike during the winter? How should I store my battery without damaging it? How can I preserve its autonomy?
Whether you ride every day or your bike is resting for the winter, here are some simple best practices to protect your battery (Bosch, Shimano, Bafang, etc.) and extend its lifespan.
Do you continue to drive in the winter?
Good news: an electric bike can definitely be used in winter.
But the battery doesn't like the cold, and its performance can temporarily decrease.
Protect the battery from the cold
- Store the battery indoors at room temperature (between 10°C and 20°C).
- Install it on the bike just before leaving, not the day before.
- After your trip, bring her back in the warmth as soon as you return.
The cold does not "break" the battery, but it reduces its range during use.
Once back to normal temperature, it regains its performance.
Extend its lifespan with these actions
- Do not always use the most powerful assistance modes.
- Avoid sudden accelerations when going uphill.
- Make sure your chain is well-lubricated (a bike that struggles = a battery that drains).
Think about winter maintenance
In winter, your bike is exposed to:
- the rain
- the salt on the roads
- humidity
A regular maintenance is essential.

Are you not using your bike this winter?
If your bike is going to sit for several weeks without being ridden, it’s mainly the battery that needs to be protected.
Ideal battery storage
- Charge level: 50% to 70% (neither full nor empty)
- Temperature: Between 10°C and 20°C, indoors
- Location: Dry room, closet, or office, never
- Control: Check once a month and adjust if necessary
Why?
- A battery stored at 100% degrades faster.
- A battery stored at 0% can go into sleep mode and become unusable.
Do not do especially:
- Leave the battery on the bike in a cold garage
- Recharge just after a cold trip
- Leaving the battery full or empty for weeks
Bonus: Protecting your bike during the winter
If the bike doesn't move:
- Inflate the tires to their normal pressure (otherwise they will deform).
- Clean the frame and drivetrain before storage.
- Store it in a dry place, away from moisture.
